Movie analysis of 8 mile

Introduction

The title of the movie is "8 mile" and it's made in 2002 in Detroit in USA. The name of the editor is Curtis Hanson and he is also known for "Wonder Boys" (2000) and "In her shoes" (2005). I belive this movies genre is Drama and Music. In the movie we find much drama around the main character Eminem or "B'rabbit". He is fighting, and having complicated relationships with different women.

Plot

The movie "8 mile" is about the lower class in Detroit and all the scenes are filmed in and around the great industrial city. And if we put this move in a timeline we look back to the late 90's while the Hip-Hop environments was in a early phase and still was a part of the gang and gangster environments.

The plot of the movie: In the movie we learn to know the hip-hop artist Eminem and what he did in he's early young-adult life. When i worked at a factory while he was struggling with his old girlfriend, he's mom and sister and he's economics. He's street name then was B'rabbit and he was part of a litle group called "three-o-three". B'rabbit is a most skilled rapper and a good batlerapper. Encouraged by he's friend who makes him go batlerapping after he had lost a couple of battles at the end he wins. And that's the start of Eminems career.

The movie is chronological and we don't find any flashback to the past. Eminem is refers to the past at some point when he broke up with his last girlfriend, but that is all. The action of the movie is just in and around B'rabbit. With that I mean that there is no parallel actions trough the movie, but only around Jimmy and he's little part of the world.
In the movie we don't fin any special symbols, only symbols made by the different gangs in the lower-class part of Detroit. Like the little rabbit sign Eminem does with his hand over his head etc.

Characters

Well! First of course we got the main person Jimmy "B'rabbit" Smith or as we know him today Marshall Mathers or Eminem is the main character in this film about Eminem before he "broke the ice" and became famous for his singing or rapping to be more precise. Next important person is David "Future" Porter (Mekhi Pihfer) who was an important supporter and friend of B'rabbit. He encouraged Eminem to preform in battle and helped him getting into a recording studio so he could record his songs. And then we have "Alex" (Brithany Myrphy)who met B'rabbit outside the car bodywork factory, and after started a mixed feelings relationship with Eminem. And so we had "Cheddar Bob" (Evan Jones) who is and person who stands close to Eminem and is very effected by earlier and still going drug abuse. Eminems mother "Sthepanie Smith" (Kim Basinger) is living in a trailer in a trailer park with Jimmy's youngest sister "Lily" played by Chole Greenfield.
The relationship between these persons are very strong, but as all other friends and families they have their problems and their argues, but in the movie we can see how attached they are to each other. And trough the movie we can see how friends and family effects Jimmy to get back on his feet so he can start doing what he's good at: singing.

Act

First act

The first view of our main character B'rabbit it's on a public toilet where he is standing in the mirror and preparing himself to the battle, we see a closeup of his face in the mirror when he is trowing water in it and look into his own eyes. And suddenly her turns around and vomit in the toilet.
The mood of this act is telling the viewers that the confidence is not where Jimmy wants it to be,  because he is more nervous than self confident. And the tension rises in anticipation of the next act.
The conflict here is in B'rabbits head when he is preparing mentally for the battle rap. So we learn to know Eminem in the first start of the movie, and so on we say "hello" to "Future" who is a great friend of B'rabbit and the leader of the battle competitions in the battle rap environment .

    Second act

In the next act we find Eminem at stage battling someone from the free world. And when it's he's turn to start he "chokes" and runs of stage while he is being laugh of. This is when a chain-reaction starts. He is now known as the man who choked and the word is on the street. And he's ex-girlfriend is laughing of him, and "the free world" is doing what they can to pull him down mentally, but Future and "three-o-three" is doing what they can to pull him to the top. And in all this B'rabbit is having his own problems at home with his mother and sister, and all this becomes an internal conflict.
At one point in the movie there is a moment where it seems like there is no point of return, when Jimmy is at the bottom and argues with "Future" and ask him leave and never talk to him again.

It is at the end before the final battle the tension is at the top because we all want B'rabbit to win, but know that the competition is hard, but as in almost every other movie we know that there is always a happy ending...

    Third act

At the end we find our main character on stage facing "Lil Tic'" (Proof) i the final battle. It's here we find the turn point of the movie when instead of only rapping shit to Lil Tic' he is using almost every fact about him selves that Lil Tic' can use to develop lines to use against B'rabbit. So he chokes, and leaves the stage i frustration of his gang "The Free World".
This is the end, and the rest of the story i believe everyone who is born between 1994 and 2000 should know that Eminen is world famous by his music, so i believe everyone knows the rest of the story after his victory over Lil Tic'.

    Editing

The entire film is shot in a normal perspective or seen from the eyes of the main character so they can reach the viewers without saying anything, because just by using the angles we know what the main characters opinion of the actions. So there is many closeups and focusing on the eyes etc.
The handling of the cameras i basic. The camera is most of the time standing on a rail for smother motions. The movie is cut between the different actions of Eminem, for almost in every scene we see Eminem and trough the movie there is alternating between long and short scenes and there is no use at all of slow motion pictures. The editor gives us an basic outside view without any "fuzz". Just a basic angle, but enough for the viewer to get close to the main character.

The use of colors and staging

The movie is in standard colors, but the colors that are used for the most in the movie is dark and cold colors. The dark and cold colors i believe shows us the depression and frustration seen trough Marshall Mathers eyes. An example is that it's almost dark and gray, and no shadows from daylight, only at night when the streetlights are on. And where it is lights it's reflected by dark walls or small hall's that makes the lights dim.
So the use of colors has an immersive effect on people who has watched or are watching this movie. ¨
And their clothes are old, and not very fashion conscious, or as I would call it "hip-hop" or "gangster" fashion. But also the clothes they are wearing is maybe all they got of clothes, because their living and economic conditions does effect what they need to prioritize.
And we definitely understands what age Jimmy lived in when he is driving around in a car from the late 70's full of rust.

    Sound and music

The music used in this movie is most of Eminems music and his main song "Lose Yourself", and there is also used many hip-hop beats trough out the movie. There is used little of sound effects in the movie, because we are trying to get to how it is being B'rabbit. So in the movie we find much talking between the different individuals in the movie.

    Conclusion

The title: 8 mile is a road that separates the middle class from the lower class in Detroit. And B'rabbit is effected by how hard it is to make it over 8 mile from the lower class to the middle class, because it's a hard competition. And i believe it is this challenge the editor wants to show us, but at the same just shows us Jimmy's first step over the road.
The cinematic means i find most based on mental power. It's a lots of things going on at the same time and trough the movie we find a lots of fighting and threats. And with that the movie is full of conflicts between for an example "The Free World" and "Three-O-Three", or between B'rabbit and his mothers boyfriend Greg (Michael Shannon). In between all this we find a lots of psychological factors that reach the viewers, so i believe that the movie is achieving the point.

And i like the movie, just because it's simple, strait forward, no special effects or film tricks. Just a depiction of a small part of a great artist's life. Iv'e seen the movie a couple of times and i feel like i know Eminen/Jimmy/B'rabbit for every time i see the movie. There is always something new to find about the little great man with dirty tattered sweater and a great anger or mental problem, but this is just how he is.
